Windows Mobile 5.0, originally codenamed "Magneto", was released at Microsoft's Mobile and Embedded Developers Conference 2005 in Las Vegas, May 9–May 12, 2005. It features support for persistent storage such as flash memory, Microsoft Exchange Server push functionality, OS update support through "adaptation kit upgrades", Windows Media Player 10 Mobile, Office Mobile, DirectShow support, a GPS management interface, and ActiveSync 4.2. Microsoft plans to offer mainstream support for Windows Mobile 5 through October 12, 2010, and extended support through October 13, 2015.

- support for dual memory architecture (RAM and persistent)
- new & faster ActiveSync (v4.2)
- Windows Media Player 10
- Exchange push functionality
- better bluetooth support
- GPS management interface
Cons
- crashes often
- supports stylus input only, no real finger-based touchscreen (elements too small)
