Hey, I know this probably isn't the official place for me to be asking this, but I asked on the forums at xbox-scene and nobody has responded.  Plus, I've seen a lot of really good advice given out on this forum.

Anyway, for upgrading XBMC, there are two ways that are outlined on the xbox-scene forums.  An application install, and a dashboard install.  I had done application installs in the past with no problems, but this upgrade required using the dashboard install method, which I feel was very vague.  Here's what it is:

* DASHBOARD INSTALL
Thanks to a new app called 'Team UIX's Xbe Shortcut Maker v1.0' by JbOnE, it's now extremely easy...
Edit XBMC\xboxmediacenter.xml to your liking & transfer contents of XBMC folder TO (this is VERY important) "E:\APPS\XBMC\". Rename <<RENAME_ME.xbe>> to something your bios can boot (see http://manual.xboxmediacenter.de/wakka.php...BMCAsDash#h44-2 or read your BIOS README) and transfer to your C partition. No need to fiddle with HOME tag anymore, and future upgrades you won't need to worry about this file on C.

Anyway, I followed the instructions as best as I could, then restarted.  Now my xbox brings me up to the "Service required.  Contact customer support."  screen (error 13.  The luckiest of all of them).  I could set everything back to the way that it was if I could figure out how to FTP into my xbox, but I can't.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Okay.  As suggested as the last post in a different thread, I started up Mechassault and chose the "Run Linux" option from there.  Now, since I installed before March 14th, it comes up to the Ltools menu.  And I'm still unable to FTP into my xbox.  Frustrating.

You should be able to FTP into Ltools, since this is actually the MXM dashboard. Determine the IP address and network configuration from the MXM dashboard settings and then configure your computer/network so that it can connect.

How is your home network setup? Are you using a router? If so, you need to confirm that your PC and Xbox can "see" each other on your network, ie, are on the same range of IP addresses defined by your subnet.

If you are having difficulty with the router, FTPing into MXM can always be done with a crossover network cable and the proper IP/Subnet setting on your PC. For example, if you Xbox has IP address 192.168.0.3 with subnet 255.255.255.0, then you could set your PC IP address to 192.168.0.2 also with subnet 255.255.255.0 (gateway or DNS can be blank) and connect directly to the Xbox with a crossover cable.

I knew you'd be able to help.

I switched my IP address to 192.168.0.2, and I could FTP in to Ltools no problem.  Then I switched my xboxdash.xbe back to what it was before I "updated" and now everything is good again.

Thank you so much.

Okay.  It's me again.  I've gotten over "breaking" my Xbox, and I'm ready to retry upgrading XBMC.  I just would really like to make sure that I know what I'm doing before I mess things up again.

Again, here's the instructions on how to upgrade XBMC for the newest version.  Apparently, this is the only way to do it to get it working correctly.

"* DASHBOARD INSTALL

What I did before was:

-I created an APPS folder, because one wasn't made when I softmodded my xbox, and I never needed to have one.  (But now it's very important.)

-I moved the XBMC folder into the new APPS folder.  This gave me an UNupgraded XBMC in E/dashboard, and an UPgraded XBMC in E/APPS/XBMC.

-I renamed Rename_Me.xbe to xboxdash.xbe and then moved it to the C partiton, overwriting the old xboxdash.xbe file.

-After restarting, my xbox would no longer boot.

If someone would be able to tell me what I did incorrectly, I would totally appreciate it.  Thank you.

We're you simply trying to upgrade XBMC? All you needed to do was FTP all of the files to /E/Dashboard/ overwriting what is was there. I am confused as to why you took this more complicated approach.

The problem you are experience is likely because you overwrote the xboxdash.xbe with the XBMC .xbe. What the guide was telling you to do was rename it to something like "default.xbe" and put it in a location that your BIOS looks to launch. I am not familiar with exactly what you were trying to do however.

The bottom line is that you need to revert the xboxdash.xbe file. Do you have a backup of your C partition?

Try uninstalling the softmod and reinstalling the NDURE softmod as per the revised guide.

Thanks very much for the reply.  It figures that I was just trying to do something more complicated than what was needed.  For some reason, I seem to remember the newer releases "requiring" that this more complicated method be used.

I'll go right ahead and ftp over the files though.

And, I've also gone ahead and registered for the forum.  :)

It was getting confusing with them changing my name.

same here.. i just did it with the new version, edited the new 'home' config file that i put on the c drive to point to f:/apps/xbmc/default.xbe, and when i booted up my xbox, i just got a blank screen-- no ftp server running or anything, so now i'm working on getting a slayer's dvd where i can put my files back to how they were-- since all my other slayers dvd's were in storage.. i can't get to them now.. regardless..  i didn't see anything i did wrong..

the hell?
