The XStream system features an integrated 1 terabyte hard drive for storage with larger storage options available including support for expanding storage through the use of external hard drives.

The XstreamHD system operates as a video on demand concept for movies, games and select content only and does not include cable programming. The system consists of a central HD media server unit that transmits to the HD media receivers which can be positioned in separate rooms; however it is important to note that one HD media receiver is required for each TV (or room) the consumer wishes to connect. According to XStream's official website, full HD quality content is automatically pre-fetched and downloaded to the media server unit based upon on a users preferences; this means just like the average PC the XStream system will have several profiles for different members of a household allowing complete customization to each family member. The content is transmitted through satellite communications using a small sub-one satellite antenna which is integrated into the XStreamHD media server.

The XStreamHD system also includes additional features such as transmit/connection support with all DLNA certified devices including but not limited to HD-TV's, Blu-ray players, game consoles, or even personal computers, customized content libraries for different member profiles, full parental control support, a built-in network video recorder (NVR) combined with 3  HDTV (ATSC) tuners which work like a DVR system to record HD content from off-air HDTV programs, an eSata interface for additional storage options, and a free business class phone upgrade.
