Hmmm..Now, I'm confused. I'm looking at the pros and cons at whether or not this receiver can scale analog 480i/480p sources to 1080i/1080p over HDMI.

The specs are confusing over the scaling:
http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/productdetail.html?CNTID=...RIBUTE

<snip>

HDMI Up Conversion • (Scale to 480p / 720p / 1080i / 1080p)
Component Video Up Conversion
S-Video Up Conversion

</snip>

In the PW report, the conflicting statements are:

1) Pro: Upscales SD sources to 1080p

2) Con: Only upconverts 480i/p, and only over analog

These points are logically incompatible. What's the real deal?

The Yamaha's video processing is built around a solution from Anchor Bay and not only offers HDMI switching, but upconversion to 1080p as well. After living with it for several weeks, I can't say that I am entirely thrilled with the way the video capabilities are implemented. It only upconverts 480i/p, and only over analog . When the incoming signal is 1080i/p or 720p, the signal is passed through without processing. On the plus side though, I ran a boatload of tests with resolution patters using both 480i component upconverted to 1080p as well as 1080i signals running directly from the HD DVD version of DVE. In these tests, I noticed no loss of detail with the Yamaha in the video chain when transcoding and/or upconverting component signals to HDMI. But on a more subjective note, I did notice that my cable feed (Comcast) was slightly sharper with my Denon upconverting the signal to 1080p than the resulting 1080i passthrough with the Yamaha. I realize that this is very subjective on my part, but my wife noticed the same and mentioned it to me.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh. I see where my misunderstanding was. The RX-V3800 can't scale HDMI sources to 1080p (What about 1080i over component video?). HDMI signal are passed-through. This is actually common among all receivers at this price point. HDMI upscaling is a feature only found in very high-end receivers like the Denon AVR-5308CI @ $5200.

Yes I am still a little confused from the review.  Not sure if they are strictly taking about HDMI -> HDMI or * -> HDMI.  I think this line "It only upconverts 480i/p, and only over analog." means that only 480i/p from component, s-video will be up-scaled.
