2007 Honda Civic Coupe

The coupe is the smaller 2-door model of Honda's ultra-popular Civic line of cars. Internally, the coupe is no different than the Sedan model, featuring the same engine and features, the difference is all on the outside, and less storage capacity for people in the back seat as well as a smaller trunk. The 2007 model stays in the eighth generation of Civics which follows the bold and futuristic styling that has garnered mixed reactions.

On the interior the coupe has an unconventional split dashboard. The speed and distance meters lie inside the top dash which is viewable above the steering wheel. The tachometer (RPM gauge) sits by itself in the lower dash which is viewable through the outside of the steering wheel. The civic also includes a central dash system for the higher end models that is used for touchscreen navigational systems and other features.

Under the hood the coupe has a 4-cylinder SOHC i-VTEC engine, which provides competitive performance with 140HP at 6300RPM. For the 2007 year Honda has maintained the same level of performance as previous years while lowering emissions and reducing fuel consumption. The 2007 coupe is rated as an Ultra-Low Emissions Vehicle, which means it emits less than 50% of the emissions than other comparable vehicles released in 2007.

Similar to the Sedan, the Civic coupe standard model comes in 3 different trims, DX, EX, and LX. There also exists the Civic Si Coupe which features an upgraded model and other improvements that are targeted towards the sporty market.

Common to all trims is the 5-speed manual or automatic transmission, front and side airbags, daytime running lights, anti-lock braking with electronic braking distribution.

2007 Toyota Corolla

The 2007 Toyota Corolla is built off of the ninth generation Corolla frame which was introduced in 2003. A 10th generation model is available in Japan, and Toyota will introduce a new redesigned Corolla for the 2009 year. Starting life as an entry level subcompact, the Corolla has moved up in the world with the Honda Civic and Nissan Sentra to make room for the Toyota Yaris. The XRS sport tuned model which featured a more powerful engine is no longer available for the 2007 year.

All three trims for the Corolla feature the same 1.8 liter 4-cylinder DOHC engine that outputs 126HP at 6000RPM. A 5-speed manual transmission comes standard, with an optional 4-speed automatic available.

Trunk space comes near the top of the compact class weighing in at 13.6 cubic feet. A large trunk space is accomplished through the goose neck support design which can crush fragile objects if you're not careful. The seats have a 60/40 split which lets them lay flat and creates an opening from the trunk which accommodates longer items such as skis or a ladder. Passenger space is a respectable 90.3 cubic feet.

Toyota has included a number of features standard, including: air conditioning, 15 inch wheels, a CD stereo system, and power mirrors. On the safety side there are front disc, and rear drum brakes, and front airbags. ABS with electronic distribution is optional for all models, and side impact airbags are optional as well.

Difference in trims

CE ($14,305) - base model that comes with all the standard features. Stereo system is four speakers. No Vehicle Stability Assist available, as it comes optional for only the S, and LE versions.

S ($15,350) - sporty model that features a six speaker stereo system and other sport enhancements such as a leather wrapped steering wheel, and fog lights.

LE ($15,515) - highest end trim that loses some of the sport features of the S, but maintains the 6-speaker stereo system. A wood grain style trim and remote keyless entry are the two main luxury additions.

2007 Mitsubishi Outlander

The newly redesigned Mitsubishi Outlander makes its debut in 2007. The most significant improvements over previous years are improved styling, the upgrade to a 3.0 L V6 engine capable of delivering 220 hp, and a 6-speed Sportronic automatic transmission. The previous generation was a 4-speed, with a 4 cylinder engine delivering 160 hp. Drawing inspiration from Mitsubishi's rally car expertise, the Outlander features AWD, a powerful engine, paddle shifting (XLS only), and MIVEC valve timing. The Outlander is marketed as an XUV; a vehicle bringing the cargo room and off-road capabilities of an SUV, while also maintaining the size, fuel efficiency, and price of a car. The 2007 Outlander is 3 inches longer than its predecessor and includes 13 cubic feet of cargo space. Mitsubishi claims 19/25 mpg fuel efficiency for the AWD models, and 20/26 mpg for the 2WD, and a PZEV efficiency rating, although being listed as SULEV II by the U.S. Department of Energy.

It is available in three trim levels: ES, LS, and the XLS. All trim levels come equipped with front wheel drive, while the LS and XLS also include AWD and 50/50 fixed front to rear power split drive train options. The top of the line XLS model also includes third row seating that folds into a well in the trunk, allowing for up to seven passengers. Also, exclusive to the XLS is the steering-mounted paddle shifter; the ES and LS models both feature the Sportronic manually shifting as well, but located on the floor.

2007 Volkswagen Rabbit

Beetle to Rabbit to Beetle to Rabbit. After more than 20 years Volkwagen is bringing back the Rabbit for the North American market to take a piece of the expanding minicar market. VW is bringing back the name more than anything, as the Rabbit has been available all this time, except it was known as the Golf. In other parts of the world the name Rabbit has never been used, and the Golf brand will continue outside of North America. The Rabbit is built on the 5th generation Golf design, and while it contains many similarities to the 2006 Golf, there are many differences and improvements as well. The launch of the Rabbit is heavily marketed to combat the already strong competition in the form of the Honda Fit and Civic, and the Nissan Versa and Sentra.

German engineered from the inside and out the Rabbit is powered by a 2.5 liter inline 5-cylinder engine that produces 150HP at 5000RPM. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard with an optional 6-speed automatic being available. Fuel efficiency doesn't compare well against the leaders in the minicar class, however at 22/30MPG for city and highway driving respectively, the Rabbit still fits.

At 94.2 cubic feet of space, the Rabbit's interior comes close to matching the interior space offered by the mid-sized VW Passat. Being a hatchback rear storage space comes above the Jetta sedan with 15.1 cubic feet available. The 4-door Rabbit also allows the front passenger seat to be folded flat to accommodate longer objects such as ladders or skis, alongside a pass through space in the rear seats.

Standard safety features include dual front airbags, front side airbags, curtain side airbags, 4-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock, brake assist, and daytime running lights. Other standard features VW has included are air conditionning, CD/radio speaker system with auxiliary input, and an outside-temperature indicator.

2-door ($14,990)

4-door ($17,110) : features a few upgrades including heated front seats, an 8-way adjustable driver's seat (as opposed to 6-way), and an in-dash 6-disc CD changer.

An extra note, the first 4000 Rabbits released in the US will be badged as 2006 models and are identical to the 2007 version except for the lack of the auxiliary input on the stereo system, and no optional tire pressure monitoring system.

2007 Mazda 3 Sedan

The Mazda3 was first introduced in 2004 and quickly received critical and commercial success. For 2007 the Mazda3 has undergone minor improvements and upgrades, mainly on the interior with more features coming standard. The biggest change is the introduction of a performance oriented model named the Mazdaspeed3. What's special about the Mazda3 is its global design process with a body developed by Volvo, electronics from Ford, with engine design/production and overall tuning happening at Mazda in Japan. There are two main models, the 4-door sedan and 5-door wagon. The sedan is further divided into an entry level called I and sportier versions coming under the S name. Mazda positions the 3 to compete in the compact commuter car segment which contains the Honda Civic and Nissan Sentra.

Powering the Mazda3i is a 2.0 liter 4 cylinder engine that puts out 148HP at 6500RPM. The S model contains a larger (2.3 liter) and more powerful engine that pushes the 4 cylinders to produce an extra 8 horsepower. Controlling the motor is a 5-speed manual transmission or an optional 4-speed automatic for the I-trim, and 5-speed automatic on the S-trim.

94 cubic feet of space accommodates 5 passengers including the driver. On the storage side there is 11.5 cubic feet in the trunk. With the 60/40 split seats folded flat the cargo space increases, though the cargo space in the 5-door hatchback is much larger regardless.

Difference in trims

Mazda 3i Sport ($14,490) - On the safety side anti-lock brakes, and front airbags come standard; side torso and head airbags are optional. A four speaker CD system comes standard with audio controls on the steering wheel, and an auxiliary input for media players.

Mazda 3i Touring ($16,850) - Audio system is upgraded to six speakers. Other upgrades include larger wheels 15 inch to 16 inch, and air conditioning, power locks, and power windows standard.

Mazda 3s Sport ($17,785) - All the upgrades of the 3i Touring except the wheels are 15 inch.

Mazda 3s Touring ($19,020) - Wheels are upgraded to 17 inch aluminum, with side torso and side head airbags coming standard.

2007 Nissan Versa

Unlike Nissan's competition in the minicar market the Versa started life as a luxury subcompact car in other parts of the world. When the minicar market started to boom in North America Nissan already had the Versa (known as the Tiida in other markets) and brought the 2007 version over. Despite the economy nature of the minicar market Nissan opted to retain the luxury roots when they brought the Versa over.

The Versa comes in four configurations, a hatchback and sedan version, and then the lower end 1.8S model, and higher end 1.8SL for both styles. There is no difference between the hatchback and sedan including the price, the only difference is the amount of interior room that is available. On that note, the interior space of the Versa is the most out of all the minicars on the market, as the Versa has the same amount of interior room as a mid-size car, even though Nissan markets it as a minicar. Leg room is the area where the Versa comes top in class, as there is 38 inches of rear leg room which is the most in the class, and even compares to many SUVs, in fact the Armada is the only car in Nissan's entire lineup that has more rear legroom.

Storage capacity on the hatchback is 17.8 cubic feet with the seats up, which is less than the Honda Fit and 50 cubic feat with the seats folded, which is more than the Fit.

The engine is 1.8L DOHC, with 4 cylinders producing 122HP at 5200RPM. 6 speed manual transmission is standard for both the S, and SL models. A 4 speed automatic transmission is available for the 1.8S, with the higher end 1.8SL automatic receiving the new Continuously Variable Transmission system (CVT) system. CVT works by using a system of levers and pulleys that eliminate the need for distinct gears, and instead the gear ratio is in constant change to reflect the optimum power output that is necessary for the particular driving scenario. CVT systems are available on other cars, and they have the added benefit of substantially increasing fuel efficiency while taking a hit on performance compared to the more traditional transmission systems.

Features wise the Versa comes standard with air conditioning; CD stereo system with four speakers; front, side and curtain airbags; high quality soft plastic interior lining; rear defroster system; and a tire pressure monitoring system.

2007 Honda Civic Si Coupe

The 2007 Honda Civic Si Coupe is the Sport Injected (Si) version of the classic coupe version. The Si is essentially an EX trim level of the coupe with performance enhancing improvements. Honda replaces the 1.8L SOHC engine with a 2.0L K20 engine that delivers 197HP at 7800RPM.

Other improvements include a 6-speed manual transmission (no automatic option available), 17" allow wheels (up from 16"), and a helical limited-slip differential for improved handling, and a rear spoiler. Other changes are cosmetic in nature and include different coloured seat stitching and gauge back lights (red), as well as an extra Si badge.

The increased performance comes at a cost that is more than just a higher price. Fuel efficiency decreases from 30/40MPG to 23/32MPG which places the Si version in the class of Low Emission Vehicles (LEV) instead of Ultra-Low Emission Vehicles like the non-Si sibling.

A 7-speaker 300 watt stereo comes standard with the Si model with satellite navigation and XM radio being optional.

2007 Toyota Yaris

Built around the core concept of "pride of ownership" the Yaris is Toyota's 2007 entry into the competitive minicar market, which includes the Honda Fit and Nissan Versa. Toyota's previous offering for this level, the Toyota Echo, received lukewarm response by critics and in the marketplace. There are two different models of the Yaris, a 3-door liftback and a 4-door sedan, a 5-door hatchback is also available in Canada. Leveraging Toyota's massive resources the Sedan and Hatchback versions of the car were created by two entirely different teams, so while the specifics of the cars remain similar or even identical, the feel is quite distinct.

A 1.5 liter 4-cylinder engine powers the wheels achieving 106HP at 6000RPM. There are two transmission options: 5-speed manual, and 4-speed automatic. This engine is one of the most fuel efficient in the class with the Yaris achieving 34/40 MPG for city and highway driving respectively.

Despite the Yaris' small exterior, Toyota has designed the interior to accommodate full sized adults and their belongings relatively comfortably. Passenger storage rests at 84.6 for the liftback and slightly larger for the sedan. Storage space is 12.8, and 12.9 cubic feet for the liftback and sedan respectively. With the optional packages, the rear seats become flatly foldable 60/40 split which increases storage capacity to 25.7 and 13.5 cubic feet respectively.

Standard features include a four speaker radio/CD stereo system, front airbags, air conditioning, and tilt steering. ABS brakes, and side torso and side curtain air bags are all optional. The sedan includes a few more features standard over the hatchback including 6-way adjustable driver's seats, and child protector rear door locks. The S Sedan model is simply the normal Sedan with some optional features already included, such as a rear spoiler and 15 inch wheels instead of 14 inch.

Mazda 3 Sport ($18,175) - 17 inch all season tires are standard, as well as power mirrows, windows and locks. 2007 Honda Fit

What happens when Honda's baby, the Civic, grows up? The void gets replaced by a totally new model. The Fit is Honda's answer to the surge in the minicar category with the Toyota Yaris and Nissan's Versa. In creating the Fit Honda preempted the concerns about small cars and offers a host of standard safety features including side front airbags, side curtain airbags, and an anti-lock braking system.

The other major concern is with space, and in this field Honda came up with two innovative solutions. Placing the fuel tank which usually lies underneath the rear seats, and placed them in the middle of the car is one design change Honda made to increase interior room. What Honda calls their Magic Seat system, which allows the rear and front seats to be rearranged in 5 different ways, transforms the Fit's interior to accommodate a variety of storage needs.

The North American models come with a standard 5 speed transmission available in both automatic and manual options. European and Japanese models have the new continuous variable automatic transmission system. The Fit is powered by a 1.5L engine that achieves 109HP at 5800 RPM. While performance isn't the Fit's strong point, fuel efficiency is near top of the class achieving a Low Emission Vehicle rating.

Honda is targeting the Fit towards student first-time car buyers and has geared a few of the features for that market. A 160 watt 4 speaker system is included standard. A sport version of the Fit is also available with mainly cosmetic changes.

2007 Toyota Matrix

The Matrix is Toyota's answer to the working professional that likes to seek adventure on the weekends. When it was introduced in 2003, the Matrix was one of the first vehicles known as Crossovers that combine the storage requirements of a van or SUV, with the handling and speed of a sedan. For 2007 the Matrix remains largely unchanged from its first model featuring minor improvements across the board. The 2006 Matrix had a sporty XRS model, and All Wheel Drive options available, but both of those are dropped for 2007. Trimming down the model lineup leaves the base model, and a slightly upgraded XR model. Built upon the Corolla base the Matrix is jointly developed with General Motors who offers an almost identical vehicle in the Pontiac Vibe.

The disappearance of the XRS model for 2007 leaves only one engine type available. Both the base and XR Matrix trims are powered by a 1.8 liter four cylinder engine that produces 126 horsepower. A 5 speed manual transmission comes standard with a 4-speed automatic available as an option.

With its wagon-esque design the Matrix contains more storage room than a standard sedan, but less than a full-sized SUV or van. With the 60/40 split rear seats folded to a completely flat surface the interior cargo space extends from 15 cubic feet to 53 cubic feet. The passenger seat folds flat as well, though at a raised height, which increases storage space even more and allows the Matrix to accommodate objects up to 8 feet in length. Due to the height of the Matrix the seats have been designed to offer a more upright position similar to larger vehicles. Toyota has also incorporated various storage options to aid in carrying various sized items around. Cargo nets, folding hooks, and an extra "hidden" storage compartment in the trunk all come standard.

Difference in Trims

Base ($15,410) - 16 inch steel wheels, two 12V power outlets, a 4 speaker CD stereo sound system, front driver and passenger airbags.

XR ($16,890) - adds an extra 115V power outlet which is enough to power a Laptop, optional 17 inch allow wheels.

The FJ Cruiser is a retro-style off-road SUV reminiscent of the older line of FJ-Series Land Cruisers. The 2007 model is the debut of the FJ Cruiser and is marketed towards young outdoor enthusiasts, with the pricing matching their budgets starting in the low $20,000s.

The FJ Cruiser competes with the Hummer H3, Nissan Xterra, and the Jeep Wrangler in the mid-size sport-utility class of vehicles that are equipped for off-road driving. There are many accessories and upgrades available for the FJ Cruiser including a bike rack, rock rails, front skid plate, tow hitch, and a ski/snowboard rack. Unique features includes side-swinging rear cargo door, and half-size, rear-hinged suicide doors for the backseat passengers.

The only available engine is a 4.0 liter, V6 engine delivering 239 hp and 278 lb.-ft of torque. It's chassis is shared by the Toyota4Runner and the Lexus GX470, although the FJ is shorter. There are three versions available: a 4x2 automatic ($22,110), 4x4 manual ($23,290), and 4x4 automatic ($23,700).

A modified version of this FJ cruiser competes in the 1000 mile Mexican off-road race known as the Baja 100.

2007 Honda Civic Hybrid

The hybrid Civic is Honda's environmentally friendly answer to the 2007 Toyota Prius in the small size sedan market. Due to the extra space requirements that the battery cells require to power the electric motor, the sedan model is the only available hybrid form. Furthermore, the battery cells reduce the available trunk space from 12 cubic feet in the non-hybrid Civic Sedan to 10.4 on the Hybrid. The battery cells also prevent the rear seats from folding inwards, to give more storage space, like they do on the non-hybrid version.

The benefit from this decrease in storage space is a massive improvement in fuel economy with the hybrid getting an estimate of 49 mpg for city driving and 51 mpg on highways.

With the new remodel on the outside, Honda has introduced new features on the inside as well. Continuous variable transmission, 4th generation integrated motor assist and vehicle cylinder management (VCM) all work together to provide a responsive car while lowering fuel consumption. The electric motor contributes up to 20 hp in the car's engine, with the gas engine providing 110 hp at 6,000 rpm.

With the new fuel saving technologies the hybrid civic can now run entirely on the electrical engine for short periods of time. This new model is also the first hybrid from Honda to achieve a rating of AT-PZEV (Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle). Britain's 4Car states that running entirely on the electrical motor isn't common and in their test of one hour of continuous driving weren't able to achieve full electric once. Furthermore, when the car is powered fully electric the batteries can only sustain this for up to 2 minutes. The Civic Hybrid uses regenerative braking, which is the technique of using the braking force of the car to recharge the batteries, this means you never have to plug in the hybrid to any outlet to recharge.

Except for the decreased storage space, and the extra battery indicators and some other cosmetic additions to identify the hybrid version, the hybrid sedan is almost identical to the non-hybrid 2007 Honda Civic sedan.

2007 Nissan Sentra

Going without a redesign for six years (2000-2006) the Nissan Sentra moves up Nissan's line up with a massive redesign for the 2007 year. Nissan joins the other car manufacturers in moving their traditional sub-compact cars into the compact range, which keeps the Sentra competitive with cars such as the Honda Civic.

The Sentra is powered by a 2.0L 4 cylinder engine that produces 140HP at 5100 RPM. A rarity for this class of cars is the standard 6-speed manual transmission, a Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT) is the only available automatic option and the highest end SL model is available with only an automatic CVT.

Moving from the 2006 to 2007 remodel and upgrade, the Sentra underwent an upsizing. Overall the car isn't much bigger than its predecessor, however inside the Sentra is one of the top in class for interior space. Passenger space is 97.4 cubic feet with 13.1 cubic feet of storage in the trunk. The rear seats are 60/40 foldable, meaning they can be folded forward to create a flat space to dramatically increase storage capacity. Nissan has also included a large amount of storage compartments for convenience, one of which is the Divide 'N Hide capability in the trunk which allows for a removable wall to split the trunk into two separate spaces (base model not included).

Nissan has included many safety features standard. Six airbags (including side curtain and side front), active head restraints and a tire pressure monitoring system. However, anti-lock brakes are only available as an option for 2.0 and 2.0S and comes standard on only the 2.0SL trim.

Trim Levels

Sentra 2.0 ($14,750) includes air conditioning, 15" steel wheels, remote manual mirrors, power windows and locks, electric power steering, and AM/FM/CD stereo system with four speakers.

Sentra 2.0S ($15,650) replaces the 15" steel wheels with 16" alloys, the stereo system is upgraded to six speakers

Sentra 2.0SL ($18,400) adds leather interior, anti-lock brakes, keyless ignition, cruise control, and bluetooth hands-free.

2007 Honda Civic Si Sedan

For the first time ever Honda has released a Sport Injected (Si) Civic sedan. The Si sedan combines the same performance enhancements that the Si Coupe brings, as well as the extra room of the normal sedan. Identical to the Si coupe, the Si Sedan has a major improvement in the engine going from the 1.8L SOHC to a 2.0L K20 DOHC i-VTEC which delivers 197 HP at 7800 RPM. Wheels are 17" allow up from 16" in the non-Si. The transmission moves from a 5-speed to 6-speed manual with no automatic option.

The extra room that a sedan brings doesn't compromise this car's performance compared to the smaller Si Coupe as the Sedan weighs only 60 pounds more.

The Si model comes with all the features that the EX version of the normal Civic offers, including all the standard safety features of side airbags, and anti-lock brakes. A 350 watt 7-speaker sound system is included that is XM radio ready, but requires an extra charge for subscription. Sticker summer tires and a satellite navigation system are also optional additions that up the cost over the base model.

Improved sport performance comes at the price of fuel efficiency as the Si model gets 23MPG for city driving and 31MPG on highway, compared to 30/40 for the non-Si sedan.

Nissan X-Trail - Bonavista Edition

2007 Volkswagen Jetta

Jetta is one of Volkswagen's most popular cars as it brings European luxury stylings and designs and wraps them in an economy price. The 2007 Jetta is part of the fifth generation of models introduced in the 2006 year. Previous Jettas were available in wagon versions, but for 2007 VW is offering only a sedan. There are four different models which vary in features and engine that range from an entry level price of $16,000 to the fully loaded GLI which comes in at $31,000. This broad range of prices makes it competitive to the other compact cars such as the Honda Civic and Nissan Sentra, while on the upper end making it compete with Nissan's Altima. With the new generation Volkswagen focused on strength and rigidity using high strength steel and laser welding in the manufacturing process.

Two engines are available for the Jetta, one for the economic models, and a more powerful engine for the sporty models. The base and 2.5 model engine is a 2.5 liter in-line 5 cylinder that produces 150 horsepower. A 5-speed manual transmission comes standard, with 6-speed automatic available as an option. Controlling 2.0T and GLI modes contain a 4 cylinder turbocharged engine producing 200HP. For the sport models the manual transmission moves up to a 6-speed standard, with 6-speed automatic optional. Both automatic transmissions feature a Triptronic manual shifter for extra control, with the sport model containing a Direct Shift Gearbox.

Inside the Jetta accommodates five people with 91 cubic feet of interior room. On the storage side there is 16 cubic feet. The 60/40 folding seats extend the storage space available.

Feature set

Every feature the Jetta base model contains comes standard on the more expensive variations, unless a more improved feature is provided instead.

Base model ($16,490) - 8 speaker CD stereo system with auxiliary input and mp3 compatible, air conditioning, 15 inch steel wheels. On the safety end there's front, side, and curtain airbags, as well as anti-lock brakes with electronic brake force distribution.

Jetta 2.5 ($18,750) - wheels are upgraded to 16 inch, and stability electronics are added.

Jetta 2.0T ($22,750) - wheels are upgraded to 17 inch alloy, the steering wheel gets wrapped in leather, and the trunk can be opened remotely.

Jetta GLI ($24,750) - all the upgraded features of the 2.0T with other sporty touches, such as alloy pedals and a leather shift knob.

Acura's first crossover SUV with its inaugural year in 2007 and has seen only minor changes in 2008 and 2009. This luxury, compact SUV is powered by a 4 cylinder, 2.4 L i-VTEC turbocharged engine (another Acura first) able to deliver 240 hp. It's drivetrain is a standard 5-speed automatic transmission with Acura's Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) able to distribute power according to conditions to the front and rear wheels. It features similar styling as the larger Acura MDX SUV.

2007 Chevrolet Aveo

General Motors is one of the biggest companies in the world selling millions of cars globally under a swath of different brands. The Aveo marketed under the Chevrolet brand is a recent entry to the subcompact field by GM to compete with offerings by Honda and Toyota in the Fit and Yaris respectively. Created by GM's Korean subsidiary Daewoo the Aveo is available in almost all markets around the world, though it comes in different names. In North America the Aveo is available as a 4-door sedan, and a 5-door hatchback known as the Aveo5. The Aveo5 comes in the low-priced Special Value trim, and an upgraded LS trim. while the Aveo sedan is offered in a base LS trim and the higher end LT trim.

For 2007, the Aveo has undergone significant changes from 2006 increasing the quality of material in the interior, and expanding the overall size of the car. However, the car is still built on the same fundamental architecture and design as the 2006 model. While some of the other manufacturers have opted for sportier styles and handling, Chevrolet intends the Aveo to provide a more comfortable ride with a "big car" feel. Also sold as the Pontiac Wave and Suzuki Swift.

All North American models are powered by the same 1.6 liter four cylinder engine that produces 103 horsepower. All models also offer the same five speed manual transmission as standard, or an optional four speed automatic transmission.

Despite the hatchback nature of the Aveo5 the amount of cargo space with the rear seats up is actually less than the sedan's cargo space with the Aveo5 coming in at 7.0 cubic feet, and the sedan at 12.4 cubic feet. With the rear seats folded down, with the 60/40 split, the amount of cargo space in the 5-door increases to 42.0 cubic feet.

Difference in trims

Aveo5 Special Value ($10,560) - The base model for the Aveo5 contains very little extra features with no air conditioning. Runs on 14 inch steel wheels, and contains a four speaker stereo system. On the safety side front and side airbags are standard with anti-lock brakes being optional.

Aveo5 LS ($12,425) - Adds various features such as air conditioning.

Aveo LS ($12,575) - Shares many of the same features as the Aveo5 LS and upgrades the stereo system to add an auxiliary input jack to speaker system for mp3 player playback.

Aveo LT ($14,075) - Wheels are upgraded to 15" aluminum. Cruise control, remote keyless entry, power windows are all added features. And the stereo system gets two more speakers with CD playback.

2007 Toyota Camry

The Toyota Camry is a mid-size sedan, and one of the best selling cars in the US. The Camry has been completely redesigned for 2007, and features handsome, aerodynamic styling, a higher quality interior, and more powerful engines. The 2007 Camry is also available as a Hybrid.

Four trim levels are available: CE, LE, SE, and XLE. Standard features on all trims include air conditioning, cruise control, tilt-and-telescope steering wheel, power windows and mirrors, a multi-function driver information display, and a six-speaker stereo system. The SE trim gets a sport-tuned suspension and unique interior and exterior parts.

All trims come with a 2.4 L 4-cylinder engine with 158 hp and 161 lb-ft. A V6 is available on all trims but the CE. The V6 displaces 3.5 L and produces 268 hp and 248 lb-ft. Naturally, its gas mileage, at 22 cmpg ity / 31 mpg highway, is worse than the 4-cylinder's 22 mpg city / 33 mpg highway. Buyers looking for even better mileage might want to consider the Toyota Camry Hybrid.

The Camry is comfortable and reliable. The SE trim is the sportiest Camry to date, but still not on a level with cometing products like the Honda Accord or Nissan Altima.

Silence PT2

Electric vehicles promise to run on less energy, and be friendlier to the environment. However, some people worry that performance and style has to be sacrificed on the altar of the environment. Silence Inc, a joint venture between two Canadian companies, EBW (Electric Big Wheel) and T-Rex, have created the Silence PT2: an electric 3-wheel vehicle. The PT2 is advertised to last for 125-250 miles on a single charge, and can reach a speed of 120 mph. It is 13 feet long, six feet wide and four feet high.

2007 is a redesign year for the popular CR-V line of SUVs from Honda. Available in both 2WD and 4WD models boasting 30 mpg and 28 mpg respectively. Most noticeable change is the sleeker exterior with the spare wheel no longer fixed to the rear hatch that now opens vertically. Available in the US in three trim levels: LX, EX, and the upscale EX-L. The CR-V is 1.37 nearer to the ground and 1.18 inches wider than its predecessor, and along with suspension and chassis tweaks will drive more like a car. Powered by a 166 hp engine that delivers 161 ft-lbs. of torque. Expected to be available in the US in late September.

2007 Toyota Supra

Contrary to rumors, Toyota's Supra replacement will in no way, shape or form, bear any resemblance to the Giugiaro-designed Volta concept which appeared in Geneva last March. Toyota does, however, plan on delivering a high-performance sports car along the lines of the departed Supra some time between the end of 2006 and 2007. This two-door, front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sport coupe might be built on an all-new platform, although it's expected that Lexus will not build its own variation.

2007 MINI Cooper

While BMW has made some minor changes to the styling of its popular midget car, the big news for the next-generation Mini will be the complete overhaul of its engine range. BMW has designed a new series of four all-aluminum twin-cam engines with French company Peugeot, at least two of which will appear in the "Mini 2." While the capacity will remain the same for all available powertrains at 1.6 liters, the engines themselves are expected to be vast improvements over the hastily designed Tritec engines that Chrysler originally provided for the vehicles. The standard Cooper will receive a substantial bump in its horsepower from 115 to 150, while the Cooper S' new turbo engine will channel its 170 hp into a much more sophisticated package.

The next-generation Tundra will be a full-size truck in every respect, with a larger V8 power plant and comparable dimensions to Detroit's biggest and best. The FTX concept truck shown at the 2004 Detroit Auto Show was a preview of what Toyota has in mind. Its outlandish size and styling may get toned down a bit for the production truck, but there's no doubt who Toyota is targeting. In fact, Toyota is so intent on building a credible truck, it's constructing an all-new plant in San Antonio, Texas, to build it.

Ford has made considerable updates for the next version of the Explorer Sport Trac, which debuted this year at the Detroit auto show. Now based on the current-generation Explorer platform, it's 2 inches wider and 5 inches longer which should ensure better handling as well as extended cargo space. Storage room will be further increased through a swing-over tubular bed extender as well as a 30-percent augmentation of the cargo bed. Independent rear suspension and Roll Stability Control should also add to the driver's control and safety, while the addition of V8 power should make it more useful for towing.

The platform features a structural central tunnel design, and it is the first platform to use both hydroformed longitudinal frame rails and hydroformed body panels. Hydroforming, bending steel with water pressure, makes for a very stiff but lightweight chassis that results in greater vehicle response and better handling, says GM.

Ferrari will replace the 575 Maranello with a variant of the 612 Scaglietti, which could retain the Maranello name or go by the new moniker of "Imola." Either way, the Ferrari 600 will be an exceptionally powerful car, with a 6.0-liter version of the Scaglietti's V12. This lethal engine is expected to yield as much as 580 to 600 horsepower. This engine will be paired with a clutchless manual transmission. In addition to engine strength, the 600 will also improve its interior room and luggage space over the current Maranello. Designed by Pininfarina, the Ferrari 600 will be built on a shorter version of the Scaglietti's aluminum spaceframe chassis and also use the 612's front/midengine layout. The 600 should weigh in close to the Scaglietti at roughly 4,000 pounds. When it debuts in the spring of 2006, the Ferrari 600 will feature an MSRP somewhere in between the F430 and the Scaglietti
